We commonly catch Oahu’s most popular tuna species, including:
- Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi)
- Bigeye Tuna (Ahi)
- Skipjack Tuna (Aku)
Yellowfin and Bigeye (Ahi) are the larger species in the area and commonly caught in weights of up to 200 lbs. The Ahi’s muscle-packed bodies provide a direct challenge to any fisherman’s endurance and tackle. Both species are gifted with majestic colors, including bright yellow fins and dark metallic blue bodies. The only difference between the two are the Bigeye’s plumper body and larger eyes. Ahi reside in the deep waters just off the shelf surrounding Oahu, but they often move closer to shore to feed. Although we catch plenty of Ahi throughout the year, peak season is June – August.
The Skipjack Tuna (Aku) is the smaller cousin of the Ahi and averages around 5 lbs. This species is a favorite among beginning tuna anglers, younger families, or any fisherman that prefers a good fight on lighter tackle. Since Aku school in larger numbers, they can offer extended periods of action and fun for anyone with a pole. We catch Aku throughout the year.
