How Fishing Charters Work

A fishing charter usually departs early from the marina and offers guests the options of private charters (you have the boat all to yourself) or shared charters (you share the boat with other avid fishermen). The captain and mates work hard to ensure you have a great fishing experience and catch lots of fish. Most charters provide bait (you may even fish for your bait before you fish for the big ones!) rods, reels and everything you need. The crew will help you with everything (if you’re a newbie) from baiting the hooks to changing broken lines to getting the catch into the boat.

Do You Keep What You Catch?

If your catch is in season and of the right size you can keep it. Some charters will even allow the crew to filet your catch and keep it in the cooler until you reach land. Take home your fresh fish for a great dinner and bragging rights. Who doesn’t love straight-from-the-ocean-to-the-grill tuna or Mahi-Mahi? Relive the fight story with your friends and a cold drink as the fish sears on the hot grill.

What to Know Before You Go

Charter companies strive to give people great fishing. This could be ruined by things like sea-sickness, sunburn and dehydration. Take something for motion sickness the night before your trip to avoid your stomach churning like the seas. Bring bottled water and plenty of sunscreen. Also, it is a good idea to bring a hat and sunglasses – the sun can be brutal when it reflects off of the waves. A good attitude goes a long way. It can take some time for the crew to get you ‘on the fish’. Be patient. Have a snack or a drink and enjoy the views from the boat as you wait for the fish to be found.

Oahu, Hawaii is surrounded by deep water in several shades of blue. It is filled with turtles, dolphins, and plenty of deep sea fishing opportunities just waiting for you to enjoy.
